Poetry In Motion: NY Avant Garde Cinema Block
(Virtual @ the Write Brain Theater (10pm-10 am (Loops))
Avant Garde literally means “front lines” & these filmmakers for tonight’s Poetry In Motion: NY Avant Garde Block certainly were at the front lines of the use of cinema as a weapon! Their enemy? The narrative form that has become routine & mainstream in pushing Hollywood’s agenda. On a journey to disrupt the social norms in a world that was anything but normal, these New York City pioneers crafted some of the best & most experimental works, trying to find new ways to use the cinematic language. Tonight we showcase some of the seminole works of the late Hollis Frampton, who beyond a wild mane of hair existed a true journeyman in where cinema could go using light, shadow, & … Even fruit! We also have Jonas Mekas, the NYC beat & Warhol luminary, a Lithuanian filmmaker that carved his name out in experimental montage filmmaking beside legends like Stan Brakhage. Finally, the elusive Storm De Hirsch, who was often eclipsed by Shirley Clarke & Maya Deren amongst female experimental filmmakers, but her psychedelic & lysergic short films were dripping with imagination & peyote juice. Hosted by filmmaker & Write Brain TV founder Kevin Ronca.
