One of the most complicated and incisive books ever written on Ireland’s liberation efforts, Tom Barry’s Guerilla Days in Ireland is an explosive memoir that details the writer’s unlikely journey from serving in the British Army during World War I to his membership in the IRA as one of its most lethal volunteers.

Barry was fighting battles for the Brits against the Ottoman Empire in modern-day Iraq when he first heard of the Easter Rising back in his homeland of Ireland. Immediately inspired by the event, Barry asked to have his rank dropped in the English Army and soon returned home to join the Irish republican movement.

Upon his return to Ireland, Barry infiltrated an ex-servicemen’s organization at the behest of local IRA officials, collecting information and forming contacts with his soon-to-be enemies. From there, Barry, using his battle experience and regimented militarism, began training the 3rd Cork Brigade’s ‘flying column’, a small band of guerilla fighters capable of rapid mobility. Heading a number of successful raids against the ‘Black and Tans’, the Brits, despite outnumbering Barry’s fighters 4-to-1, withdrew from the area on account of the staggering fatality rate they incurred.

Barry soon became a commander in the IRA, and fought against pro-Treaty Irish in the subsequent civil war. However, the bloodshed with fellow Irishmen disheartened Barry, and he resigned from his leadership posts. This disillusionment continued, on-and-off, until his death in 1980.

Carol Reed’s 1947 psychological thriller / noir Odd Man Out stars James Mason (in a career-making performance) as Johnny McQueen, a revered Irish Nationalist leader who, after escaping from jail and living underground for over a year, attempts to commit a heist in order to secure funds to arm the IRA with the guns and ammunition. When the robbery is botched and McQueen is injured in a gun-fight during the getaway, the rebel leader is stranded on the streets of Belfast and takes refuge from police in an abandoned bomb shelter.

As his fellow Provos search for him amidst the city-wide manhunt, McQueen, wracked with guilt and delirious from blood loss, staggers around town in search for a safe house. With allegiances split in the community, and a hefty bounty on his head, McQueen takes stock of his past decisions and dwindling future prospects as the locals feud whether or not to turn over the once-beloved leader.

Widely considered one of the very best films of its era, Odd Man Out is a film we are truly proud to present as this week’s Classic Movie Monday feature here on WRITE BRAIN TV.

This wildly electric three-piece No-Wave Outfit hailing from the industrial and port town Dublin-Drogheda corridor of Ireland is the exact type of overpowered spark we were looking for to kick off the musical aspect of Ireland: Liberty or Death month here on Write Brain TV.

By far one of the most exciting new bands you’ll hear all year, Spit’s debut EP Suffocate Yrself is a delirious batch of tortured Noise and atonal Free Jazz. The squall of spiky guitars, buzzing bass, and ferocious, cymbal-heavy drums; it is a barrage of sonic annihilation sure to knock the cobwebs out of your head the morning after a long night drinking pints in the pub.

Like all good Punk, most of these songs are short and direct, with shrieking and strangled guitar tones that ooze and spurt with feral violence and discord. Spit play with the calamitous unease of a cracked bell that tolls and echoes thin and dissonant at the hour of death, raging, simmering, slicing like a slasher film set in a house of mirrors.

If you are a fan of Glenn Branca / Theoretical Girls, This Heat, or The Contortions, then this band is absolutely for you. And for the uninitiated, Spit’s raucous clangor, distorted vocals, and guitars like scalpels come on sacrilegiously surgical, vulgar, like a desecrated nervous systems’s final spasm.

The infamous, rabble-rousing revolutionary Irish author Brendan Behan’s darkly humorous landmark autobiography Borstal Boy solidified the writer’s role as rebel Ireland’s resident scéalaí (storyteller). Based on Behan’s time in an Irish juvenile reformatory, and his subsequent experiences in prison, Borstal Boy crackles with colloquial banter and beams with the youthful vigor characteristic of classic coming-of-age tales, juxtaposed against the authentically grim realities of incarcerated life.

Behan came from radical roots; his father a veteran of the Irish War for Independence and his mother a revolutionary activist who was close associates with National hero Michael Collins. Joining the Irish Republican Army’s youth organization at the age of fourteen, he became a full member of the IRA at 16, and soon after was arrested after being found with explosives while en route to bomb a British shipyard. Refusing to inform on his associates, Behan was sent to a series of prison camps and English reform schools where he was condemned to serve alongside British and Irish juveniles alike, reshaping his understanding of the widespread bloodshed and deep disparities between Irish Catholics and English Protestants.

While surprisingly devoid of political pontifications, Behan’s lively command of “gutter-talk” and an array of poetic and musical interludes dissolve the national and religious divisions and emphasizes a working-class ethos that offers a Marxian critique of “The Troubles”.

Write Brain TV is proud to present this singularly radical and stylistically brash work of Irish literature.

Both educational, artistic, & demonstrations of alternate fighting styles often not seen in the West – this crash course (literally) is both uplifting through the language of cinema by putting a spotlight on Africa’s history with martial arts long erased by the Western empire – while also exploring new ways for the resistance to arm themselves with the many dangers they face in the current climate.

Each film captures the heart, spirit, & history of these unique fighting styles from Donga (Ethiopian Stick Fighting), to Laamb (Senegalese Wrestling), & last but not least; Dambe (Nigerian Martial Arts). 25% of all proceeds will go to Good Trouble Cooperative; a revolutionary feminist activist collective.

Hailing from Leeds, England, Lewis ‘Burner’ Pugh is a Traditional musician influenced by everything from bluegrass and country through to skiffle and punk. Having been raised on bluegrass and folk music, Pugh kicks-up the socially-conscious and worker-led ethos of Dustbowl troubadours like Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger on the rollicking new Bullets for Bread, released earlier this year. On this, Pugh’s third solo album, all ten songs on the album are originals, although it’d be easy to mistake this collection of songs as a crate of 45s having just fallen off a rickety horse-drawn wagon on its way to a plough auction. Pugh plays guitar, banjo, and harmonica, calling in bandmate Steven Hicken Jr. (from his THE BURNER BAND project) to play steel pedal guitar and THE OFTEN HERD’s Niles Kreiger to strum the fiddle, conjuring a twangy, sepia-toned tracklist that channels contemporary concerns through the exhilarating, all-but-lost form of Protest Music. Featuring ‘The Ballad of Emily Swann’, a true story of domestic abuse and murder in Yorkshire, and ‘Featherstone Massacre’, which details the story of soldiers opening fire on picketing miners, “Pugh” as folk music reviewer At The Barrier writes, “make his passion a vibrant and uplifting force, with quality of the tunes a distinct added bonus. You might even call him the cowpunk Billy Bragg!”

TERMINATor is New York trio of experimental No Wave punkers made up of Allison Brant, Lauren Rodriguez, and Veronica Dye. Angular, discordant, and brimming with that certain brand of DIY defiance, Church Music doubles-down on the group’s thrillingly bleak and Velvets-y debut to deliver one of this year’s most daring and distinct LPs. This time, TERMINATor boils down their lo-fi sludge to its essence; taut and tortured guitars, laconic rhythms, and the intoxicatingly droll, distant, and disaffected vocals, and a touch of haunting piano keys, resulting in a straight shot of dark poisonous swill manufactured to kill pop stars. Infusing the art-school adventurism of Wire and the iconoclast exuberance of The Raincoats or Beat Happening, with a spill of the bleak street poetry of Lydia Lunch, TERMINATor have brewed their very own blend of mutinous punk; the sound of late-night lurkers slinkily stalking along grey-rain soaked pavement down into the subway tunnel to feed on scraped filth and cigarette butts as the early morning bustle of commercial commuters drive out the last vestiges of dark sanctuary. Welcome to New York … WRITE BRAIN TV is proud to present this NEW RELEASE of TERMINATor’s minimalist masterpiece Church Music!

This album by Palestinian artist known simply as Zalaam, is an epic and gut-wrenching, promising to take you out of your comfort zone and force you to reckon with the historic and ongoing genocidal decimation of the inhabitants of Filastin. The album commences with a wearied, lamentful acoustic start before throwing the switch into pummel mode, where an onslaught of heavily-sludged electric guitars and earth-shattering percussion ushers in Zalaam’s tenacious and throaty vocal javelins. Some notes soar, while others decay, falling to fester in the mires of rage — where the sad notes are defiantly inflected with hope and righteous indignation; a tension so begging for release, that we are left to find ourselves in the pieces left in its wake. This is the sound of dismal and dire consequences, the shriek of crying mothers and orphaned children; of humanity’s assault on itself; of lionhearted courage and resistance and unending resilience; of fighting the forces of mal intent with dedicated lethal force; the staccato of machine-gun fire in broad daylight, the sound of a humvee drive through a war-torn sandstorm at 3am. This is the sound of fucking revolution.

A name allegedly taken from one of the many apartheid Israel ‘checkpoints’ that blocks Palestinian passage — is an avant-garde activist sound art project that creates experimental electronic music raising awareness about the struggle for liberation, justice and self-determination, and against settler-colonialism, occupation, and the ongoing genocide in Gaza. Checkpoint 303 Tunes brilliantly utilizes “archive and field recordings, predominantly from Palestine and various countries throughout the Arab world, to construct soundscapes that weave cinematic audio with experimental sound processing, breakbeats & glitch. At times, drum lines and agitated staccato glitches become indistinguishable from archival gunfire, as one can only imagine how much these jarring sounds speak to the devastation, carnage, and surely-splintering psyches of the Palestinian cause. Led by Tunisian producer SC Mocha, who has numerous collaborations with Palestinian artists, Checkpoint 303 has performed all around the Arab globe, and even exited through the gift shop as an opening act for Massive Attack (whose frontman is rumored to be the world-renowned street artist Banksy).

Featuring a wailing array of droney, fuzzy guitars, stampeding drum runs, and washed out vocals, TBHDC urge listeners to “Please take the time to listen to the earth. It is crying.

From the farthest reaches of Barbados comes a blast of cosmic slop and psychedelic strumming of one man band Kadeem Ward (and his mechanical devices), capable of stretching the fabrics of space and time with the stroke of his guitar. In Forced Convictions / Broken Whispers EP, Ward unleashes the endless power of his electric axe and mystical wah-wah pedals, shattering our doors of perception wide open. From there he gives birth to a style all his own, the perfect bastard child of Hendrix penchant for improvised mind-melting bluesy overtures at live shows and Robert Johnson’s minimalist style of two-walls-and-an-amp recording. With just two tracks stretching over twenty minutes each, Ward conjures juxtaposing visions; Hallucinatory audio assaults of a molecular world where all is one, a constant flow of moving parts of beautiful chaos that melt into a well orchestrated piece of musical synergy. With its freedom flow of fluid, yet feverish solos, scales of musical sorcery, and long slow-building arcs to a faraway oasis, Ward (and his mechanical devices) make sure when the EP is over and you’re sitting in a silent daze in your room contemplating what just took place… Not one piece of his heart and soul hasn’t been emptied into the atmosphere.

Hailing from Baltimore, Strawberry Sleepover oozed onto the underground music scene and began with their debut Electric Blue. Psychedelic sorcerer & lead guitarist Tom Letterman conjures the spirit of psychedelia and Zappa-like ethos that progressively builds each track, ending with the familiar and mind-melting finale Morning Glory Medley (which is also the theme song to our original series, Write Past Midnite). But Tom Letterman isn’t alone on this odyssey, with Adam Sommer’s vocals and songwriting directing the free-flowing explosion of sound like the moon does the tide, giving the sometimes extended jams a lit path to travel, an auditory astral projection sent deep into the crevices of the listener’s mind. The strumming of Dave Lambert’s 12-string guitar keeps the band’s journey to space in orbit, accompanied by the thunderous percussion of Dominic Bently, backed by Blake Spooner’s booming bass keeping the rhythm, taming the wild beast. Chris Stoll rounds it out, his keyboards capturing the magic in a bottle that is Strawberry Sleepover. We’re proud to present this underground classic from one of psychedelic rock’s most exciting new ensembles.

Zaire drags the listener into the raw Africa, merging tribal instruments and synths with the soundscapes of the Congo Rainforest. What starts as a jab at the Disney-clichés of Afro-House and Tomorrowland’s definitions of the ethnic evolves into a sonic abyss that tackles the wars, the injustice, the colonial hate and the never-ending struggle for a final freedom of existence in a landscape torn apart by the vultures of the world. With thumping grooves and a dense shamanic atmosphere, the constant quotes and samples by warlords and mercenaries alike invoke a documentary-like vibe. The album aims for an assault on the senses that would be both at home at a warehouse rave and a Tutsi circumcision ritual – but its intensity and malariac flashbacks flow best in the moments when the humid techno, the jungle Marxism and the diesel-fuelled black magic converge. Recorded using original samples collected during travels, along with personal equipment, synthesis and other instruments. We’re proud to present this album, never-before-released and exclusively available in Write Brain TV’s growing of underground music.

With scuzzy guitars doused in alchemy and dusted with burnt sugar and unrelenting, pelt-pounding percussion, Essex, Maryland’s The Dead Ringers perpetrate loutish two-piece garage rock that ricochets around a barroom like a loaded cue ball. Brandishing the rousing raw filth of protopunkers like The Dictators and the semi-lucid lunacy of Titus Andronicus, with sneering-yet-melodic distorted vocal bleats, stiff molasses basslines, treacly harmonica and horn work, and anthemic sing-alongs, this is a positively exhilarating album start-to-finish, guaranteed to have you squinting through the smoke and hugging your beerhall brethren. A few standouts include the warbly, wiry “Buried”, and the 11-minute epic “Jeff Feels Better,” a free-jazz, back-alley excursion that sounds like it stumbled off of the B-Side of The Stooges’ Fun House.

As gritty, vile, and vulgar as any rapper you’ll ever hear, New York battle legend Jak Progresso aka Jak Tripper is a legend in the underground scene. On his 2020 album Punches Pilot, Progresso is in top form. Tripper made a career slinking and shirking around subway station corridors, dark alleyways, and cement basements, where you’d find him working himself into a psychotic dervish trance before spewing acid rap and eroding away his victims. Owing his unique voice to the kind of lacerated vocal chords only attained through hard living, gutbucket whiskey, and incessant sherm smoking, Jak’s rhymes are drenched with ultra-violent, ultra-visceral imagery and hazy late night B-film horror tropes. And as a producer, Tripper’s sound is influenced by the grimy Shaolin-style of early 90’s NY, with eerie string slashes and menacing, murky drums, all lending themselves perfectly to his brutal punchline repertoire.

Hailing from Baltimore’s growing underground music scene, Strawberry Sleepovers mind-melting music is breaking barriers and oozing into the cracks between garage and psychedelic rock. Their third official studio album Exploding Strawberry Inevitable is a culmination years of on-the-road tours into grimy bars, basement acid parties, and hole-in-the-wall venues across the North East (The kind of lairs it wouldn’t be out of the norm seeing party-goers downing Whiskeys or dropping blotter acid on their tongue at). It was these arenas Strawberry Sleepover perfected their cosmic sound and an ability to whisk the audience away to barren lands deep in the caverns of their consciousness. Keep your third eye open for future releases from this Maryland mainstay.

Born as Prince Norodom Sihanouk – his career was polarizing & prolific in the history of Cambodia – this provocative memoir since the 70’s has reportedly been confiscated in airports across America. Sihanouk’s career in politics begin when he was coronated in 1941, but soon stepped down from the position of King shocking both his family & the country. Planning to leave palace intrigue behind to connect with the working class & poverty-stricken farmers across the country, Sihanouk entered politics & was elected to prime minister. Soon his journey would involve destroying political agitators & enemies, often backed by the US & Western imperialists, the Khmer Republic would eventually force him on the run being exiled to China. Later, his journey would grow more intense when he’d align with the Khmer Rouge & other guerrilla factions to take the country back after the United States bombed neutral Cambodia leaving an opening for a communist takeover. Installed as the new head of state, with Pol Pot as a leader from the shadows, Sihanouk would soon discover the Khmer Rouge’s true aim of a “Year Zero” mass extermination & attempt to create the perfect race. From the labor camp conditions to the Killing Fields, Sihanouk would immediately resign, ending up on house arrest until the Khmer Rouge fell. This book outlines his harrowing journey to fight of the CIA’s deadly intentions through every aspect of his career, with the agency even backing the Khmer Rouge by the end, after once opposing them.

Written and compiled by ethnomusicologists Sam-Ang Sam and Chan Moly Sam, a Cambodian-American couple who both spent their formative years steeped in their homeland’s art and dance traditions, this meticulously-researched work illuminates the ancient folk dances and songs of their beloved Cambodia. As a teen, Sam-Ang Sam studied at both the Ecole Nacional de Music and the then-newly-formed University of Fine Arts, specializing in these very folk dances. After graduating, Sam-Ang was apprentice to two of the royal palace’s master musicians, performing for tourists and state-sponsored emissaries by day, and learning from village musicians in the art of shadow puppet dramas by night. Later, he received a scholarship to study Western compositions at the University of the Philippines. Chan Moly Sam was schooled at the Royal University of Fine Arts, where she received guidance from dance masters, quickly becoming a master herself in both the male and female roles. It was during this time that she met and married Sam-Ang, and after the couple’s stint in the Phillipines, they were unable to return home due to the Khmer Rouge’s stranglehold, and were forced to move to Philadelphia. Despite finding themselves stateside, the couple never gave up on the Cambodian arts, soon forming the Apsara Ensemble, which not only organizes performances in the US, but acts as a spotlight for up-and-coming dancers in Cambodia. Throughout Cambodia’s tumultuous history, various ruling factions have tried to obliterate these sacred tribal artforms, but the Sams have been steadfast in keeping these traditions alive.

This madcap six-piece outfit from Fort Worth, Texas conjures up a rousing and skronked-out brew of post-punk mania. Teeming with deranged saxophone blares, blistering buzzsaw guitar, and exuberant vocal bleats, the band brandishes a brassy muscularity reminiscent of Downtown Boys and the hubris and exuberance of new wave visionaries X Ray Spex. Howling and wailing away about all matters of manic affairs, the Minutemen-like urgency is only matched by the surprisingly sweet melodic lines and the impressive throaty acrobatics of the vocals. With wailing vocals by Rob, blaring sax styling by Dan, shredding lead guitar by Braden dueling with the rhythmic strums of Nick, a slapping bass by Christian, and hard-hitting drums by John Foster, you won’t find these people online (which they prefer), adding to the mystique of this never-before-released album by the best underground super group you never heard of.

No trip to the Golden Triangle would be complete without understanding the United State’s government & the CIA’s complicity in the opium & heroin trade in Southeast Asia. Few writers have done a better job exposing this connection than historian Alfred W. McCoy’s explosive journalistic deep dive The Politics Of Heroin In Southeast Asia. Causing a media firestorm upon its release due to its revelations (with the CIA trying to stop its release) this non-fiction book remains the gold standard in investigative journalism on the American empire & one of the first books to truly expose the US government’s culpability in drug trafficking, illegal coups, & murder, willing to use any means to dominate global regions for its own ends – no matter the cost. Spanning the end of World War II – largely considered one of the only just wars – to the Vietnam war, the book chronicles the United State’s direct involvement not only in trafficking drugs from the Golden Triangle, but how Air America directly transported the drugs for shadow military operations with the proceeds funding further overseas conflict off the books. This black book operation’s effects would ripple from a growing opioid epidemic in the United States to a destabilization of Vietnam that would cause the death of thousands & impact millions. We’re proud to present Alfred W. McCoy’s masterpiece, an exposes the depths of evil the imperialists will go to fund their clandestine plans – even if congress won’t foot the bill – & even if it destroys civilians here & abroad.

Covering the rise of socialism & communism in Vietnam in the aftermath of fighting off the French colonizers in the first Indochina War all the way to right before the Vietnam war, communist icon / politician / revolutionary Lê Duẩn’s part-manifesto / part-historical tome analyzes the philosophy behind Marxism & how it applies to Vietnamese culture, as well as the implications of long-standing colonialism & imperialism in Vietnam by the West. Rising through the ranks of the stalwart revolutionary organization Central Committee Of The Communist Party Vietnam (VCP), Lê Duẩn’s experience wasn’t limited to simply studying communism, but fought as a brave revolutionary soldier in the first Indochina war that warded off the colonizers risking his life for his country. After chairman Hồ’s untimely death in the second Indochina war, Lê Duẩn rose to become the leader of the party. He would continue this role until his tragic death in 1986. His experiences on the field would extend to Vietnam’s eventual invasion of Cambodia to the battle the dangerous & unfortunately China-backed Khmer Rouge run by the deranged & sadistic despot Pol Pot, a battle they would lose in 1979. Lê Duẩn’s experience on the battlefield fighting to the imperialists to his deep understanding of Marxist philosophy is one of the rare instances where one can see the words being put into practice. With a wide net that covers history, ideas, & a fascinating vantage point, Lê Duẩn’s book is one you won’t wanna miss!

This Greenville, SC psych-rock band sounds like they’d actually be more at home in dusty desert vista dregs sucking tequila out of cactus paddles and daring the gods to strike them down. Melding the industrial goop of classic Sabbath with the taut sophistication of Protomartyr, post-hardcore influences, and all the derelict grand stylings of stoner rock’s past, the result is this wild, primal, southern-fried Goo Goo Muck. Basslines churn like midnight dirges and jangly guitars that shimmer like reflections off of sooty heavy metal machinery, creating a sound so sludgey it’s like shoving a stethoscope into a bursting oil pipeline.

From the catacombs of underground hip hop lives an emcee that’s stalked his way through the scene for 2 decades. With over two dozen EPs under a belt fashioned from the decapitated heads of emcees that dangle like trophies from his battle rap days, Jak Progresso is a name you should know if you have an appetite for skull-crushing punchlines and grimy New York beats. In “Pendragon”, Jak brings sharpened steel bars and deep laced beats, creating a moody pit-and-the-pendulum auditory experience. It’s all neatly arranged over dark strings, thunderous drums, and obscure samples, inviting audiences to take part in their funeral procession. With “Lines Of Bleach” the horror-show begins, bringing jet black humor and fresh piano rolls fresh from the morgue of classic 90s rap that’s drenched in a delirious Gonzo style all its own.

This month, Write Brain TV is taking you to the front lines of Latin America’s “Cinema of Subversion”, a 60-year long insurrection against the traditions and conventions of the Hollywood Studio system and its inherent ties to the parasitic Capitalist class. Debuting in 1965, the term ‘Third Cinema’ was used by Argentine directors and leaders of Grupo Cine Liberación (The Liberation Film Group) Fernando Solanas and Octavio Getino to signify a wholly new form of filmmaking that countered the ethos of the frivolous so-called entertainment generated by Western hegemony. First cinema refers to the bourgeois Hollywood production model that focuses on commercialist spectacle, glitz, and glamour; inoffensive works that challenge no authority, but rather, reinforce conformist opinions and reify the status quo. Second cinema would be the films of European auteurs (think French New Wave) who, while superficially rejecting many of the trappings of typical Hollywood fare, still maintain a very individualistic scope and uphold the gatekeeping ArtHouse exhibition award rackets. But with Third cinema, these Latin American filmmakers envisioned cinema as a revolutionary act that not only adopts a collectivist aim meant to inspire the masses to rebel against tyrannical governments, but also reimagines the production of these films to be a non-centralized, community undertaking.

An Epiphonic Convert Thriving in the New-Dark; Morrocan mint tea and a hairless Roman Jesus alongside Them Suicide Doors, but fuzzy, muddled, and deranged — drum-machines jazzed Mazzy-like to a baffled Arab Mary in chainmail and leather. She in blue but red with open veins standing in stillness — teetering, teeming to speak of the dissonance sacrificed so-to reverberate in vast Vega-dripped Somascapes … But it is to be no longer. Until this, Maria Violenza’s Scirocco becomes something you feel in your psyche first — ready-made like a pagan past-life — and then in your chest like many warbled statues that quake before crumbling in pumping capillaries, and then felt on your heavy shoulders and the back of your haunched neck, as the music stalks and haunts from behind, lurking like you’re last in line crawling through the halls of a fun house. Like the color of the skin under your fingernails when you can’t hold on any longer, but you do because you must, as Faustus deems the job isn’t finished quite yet. This record for once conjures the truth of spectral vagaries in this here our darkness that is darker than a shadow, or the singular corner in a tragic deep hole. There is no vintage in a void, and our new-dark never reveals itself in cautioned caverns — only in love and violence and Scirocco.

Find an abandoned warehouse in a dilapidated industrial district. Play LOUD. Smoke, drink, and fucking riot! And oh yeah, the cops are on the way, but you’ll be gone before they get there. This is elemental piss-bucket gutter-slop three-piece Punk Rock from somewhere in Who-gives-a-fuck, Virginia where confederate ghosts haunt like the great sootish fog chugging from chimneys the good stuff that makes the air in the room murky and thick and not even a proper hose-down could make you feel clean after. Of course the music is brash and distorted and warbling forth crookedly for it must barrel across the tracks like a train in a bad blues song just to smack you upside your contented head to remind you that life is short and you’re not moving fast enough.

This radically-charged mixtape is hosted by BMOREALIEN, DJ BANANA PEEL, and Sulffffffur, featuring rappers Ghais Guevara, the Tew World Order collective, the Money Over Zombie collective, John Wells, Perseu$, alanfromearth, among others. On this newly-released self-titled mixtape, FBFC come out spraying fire, and the steel-forging-steel collective spirit in the studio is evident, as the supergroup brandishes an arsenal of ferocious lyricism spanning the full spectrum of hip hop’s past; from inciting, politically-conscious bars, to felonious street scenes, to impressively melodic speed spittin’, and even some rock-the-mic full-posse cuts. This mixtape is a testament to the artform, that immediately grabs your attention and keeps on the trigger throughout, delivering a relentless barrage of clever rhymes, heavy bravado, and conscious wordplay.

Before he became a household name & D.C legend in both comedy and experimental hip/hop, ephemeral musical presence & lord of the lysergic rhymes Sir EU (also host of Write Past Midnite) crafted this early album over a decade ago. Since then he’s conquered both the rap game and the independent rap scene with a prolific 24 hour record breaking freestyle in a hotel lobby that was equal parts performance artist, endurance test, & old school hip/hop spirit mashed into one, recently graced the stage of South By Southwest’s rising talent, & teamed up with glitch artist Baltimore legend Dinkie Pie to build a reputation as formidable counter-culture content creators. But before he grew bored of mastering classic rhyme-slingin’ backpack rap he delivered the aptly titled FXCK, embodying the phoenix-like spirit of the old school hip hop you’d hear on classics like Atliens and early Del The Funky Homosapien cuts, where each line moves like an endless unpredictable stream of conscious under drug-laced drums and raw instrumentals.

“Pulp of rind, same as pulp of flesh… Won’t be long, until that’s all we’ll have left…” This stanza of the first poem of Marc Rubendall’s new photo book Shambles in Brandy’d Wine encapsulates the deteriorating ramshackle state of small town America through the viewfinder of his old polaroid camera and scribbled notes dripping with blood, booze, and vivid streams of consciousness. Rubendall captures Brandywine Valley at it is, as much as it used to be: A thriving part of the USA’s industrialized eco-system, now nothing more than a burial ground of scattered bones buried by greedy land developers and venture capitalists. Rubendall chases ghosts across the barren landscapes of dilapidated barns and rotten crop fields, pairing his dusty polaroids with the prose acting as an abstract eulogy for the ghosts of the past. Rubendall takes readers everywhere, from splintered parts of suffering Southeast PA, to the Dupont polluted ponds of Delaware, documenting the extinction of a place that used to be full of fruits of a farmer’s labor, old stretches of dying white picket fence towns that once bustled with life, and gutted steel cities now rusted and abandoned. The “Shambles” the title refers to is also a reflection of Rubendall himself at the time the poetry was conceived. Written a decade earlier when he was trapped deep in throes of a drinking habit and few prospects, he eventually came to a similar split path the Brandywine Valley did; Caught between a dark alluring past and an uncertain future. But unlike the places in this book; He picked the right path and eventually found the light.

Continuing our exploration of the media’s role in the war machine; We bring this trailblazing book by Chomsky that took the world by storm upon its release in 1988; arguing that the media operates as an ideological institution that employs a system of filters and biases that function to limit public imagination and discourse in order to maintain the prevailing status-quo. Herman and Chomsky outline their ‘Propaganda Model’ of US corporate media, as well as their Five Filters of Media Bias, revealing mass media as merely an exploitative tool for the powers that be, rather than a true Fourth Estates serving public interests. Throughout the book, the authors eviscerate the idea that American journalism is a bulwark against governmental overreach, arguing that the media ultimately act as a rubber stamp, justifying and reinforcing the worst excesses of US hegemony and imperialism while co-opting dissident voices that are deemed ‘too extreme. Interestingly enough, Herman and Chomsky had first-hand knowledge of the press’ reactionary censorship, as their first collaboration together, a book called Counter-Revolutionary Violence: Bloodbaths in Fact & Propaganda, was prevented from release when Warner Publishing shut down its subsidiary who planned to print the book. Fortunately, by the time Manufacturing Consent was released, Herman and Chomsky had enough academic influence to see the book through, unleashing a powerful critique of US empire that still proves incredibly useful to this very day.
