Farewell My Concubine
(Directed by Chen Kaige (1993, 171 min)
When a young 5th generation aspiring Chinese filmmaker Chen Kaige put every ounce of his heart & soul into bringing a traditional story from his homeland’s rich history to the world, he had no idea what impace it would leave. Kaige’s film would achieve many milestones for Chinese cinema, including becoming the 1st Chinese film to win the Palm d’Or, in addition to Golden Globes, BAFTA, Cameraimage & more.
After decades of China’s film industry under Mao maintaining a safe distance from the Hollywood machine, Farewell My Concubine woke the world up to the infinite potential for the future of Chinese cinema. Kaige explored complex themes of reality & illusions, identity, homosexuality, suicide, & other issues seldom seen from the global south at the time, connecting a relatively isolated country in regards to the West, with Kaige’s cinematic language connecting with people around the world.
Expecting a hero’s welcome upon his return to China after touring the world, he was heart broken to discover the film was banned with Chinese officials insisting. he re-edit the movie. After immense backlash, a censored version was later release. We’re showing the original film in its full glory, as beautiful as it is tragic.
We’re proud to preset this Chinese masterpiece from one of its boldest & bravest auteurs, who. who broke barriers & staked China’s place in film’s history forever.
