City That Never Sleeps Block #1  6/14

(Virtual @ the Write Brain Theater (10pm-10am)

Kick this weekend off proper with a subway right back to the mean streets of what was once the “Rotten Apple”, a time when pushers, freaks, misfits, beatniks, hippies, avant garde artists, & other weirdos ruled the night life. Considered the concrete jungle aka “Fear City” (complete with a pamphlet for tourists on how to survive), late 60’s New York was the beginning of what would become a melting pot of oppressed people crafting & creating subcultures out of their brutal conditions. Before Rudy “cleaned up” the city by kicking the dealers off the streets & bringing in Big Pharma, pushing the radical & activists out of neighborhoods & bringing in militarized police, or when they pushed out organized crime to bring in wall street, this collage of immigrants, travelers, & day trippers helped inspire some of the most beautiful & tragic art in American history. Tonight we celebrate the City That Never Sleeps in our 1st of 3 blocks this month, each covering a different decade. Specially curated by filmmaker & founder Kevin Ronca, who will be hosting with his voice all the way from China, we’ve got everything from Kenneth Anger to Brakhage, from Warhol’s factory, to documentaries about groupies. News reels & avant garde shorts will be collaged in a maniacal blend of chaos & order, a perfect homage to the New York City we celebrate, where the city was ruled by the people for better or worse, rather than buy corporations, land developers, & special interests. It kicks off at 10 pm EST & doesn’t end till the Sun comes up. Pop in any time! A recap will be available to stream for members.
