Sunday Virtual Matinee (11/24)
(Virtual) (Doors open 3pm EST-5pm EST)
In the late 60’s to the mid 70’s, there was an onslaught of anti-war cinema that exploded around the world. Whether it was “Battle Of Algiers”, which humanized the Algerian revolution & acted as an artful indictment of France’s colonialism, “Apocalypse Now”, which shed light on the horrors of Vietnam, or the work of the French New Wave showing the global anti-war movement growing in real-time, this time of cinema was standard fare;
But in 50’s, Father Knows Best dominated TV, the post-World War II patriotic propaganda seeped into every film & television program, with Red Scare witch hunts attempting to find anyone that even vaguely criticized America’s way of life. Anti-war films didn’t exist… Except for this week’s Sunday Virtual Matinee; a 3D anti-war film with a cast made of up almost entirely of service members, a technique seldom used in Hollywood at the time!
Even more profound, is that it challenged the motives & horrors of the United State’s involvement in the Korean War, sparking outrage from the movie going public, forcing the empire to ban the film throughout the country upon its release, which halted its growing buzz directly in its tracks & made it a lost relic of anti-war cinema…. Until now!Â
This Sunday matinee is free to the public & will feature a panel of activists after analyzing the implications of the film. Doors open 3pm EST!Â
